TRAVEL TIPS

Visitor Information

The civic tourism board—Turismo Buenos Aires—operates information outlets with English-speaking staff at both airports and seven other locations around the city, including Centro, Recoleta, and Puerto Madero. Hours can be erratic, but the booth at the intersection of Florida and Marcelo T. de Alvear (near Plaza San Martín) is usually open weekdays from 10 to 5 and weekends from 9 to 6. The board’s website includes downloadable maps, free MP3 walking tours, hundreds of listings, plus insightful articles on porteño culture, though at this writing, all information is available in Spanish only.

Each Argentine province operates a tourist office in Buenos Aires. The government umbrella organization for all regional and city-based tourist offices is the Secretaría de Turismo (Secretariat of Tourism). Limited tourist information is also available at Argentina's embassy and consulates in the United States.

Online Resources

All About Buenos Aires

Mapa Interactivo de Buenos Aires is an interactive online map run by the city government. It allows you to search for specific addresses, as well as facilities and services such as ATMs, hospitals, and bicycle lanes.

Culture and Entertainment

The Arts & Media section of the daily Buenos Aires Herald (an English-language newspaper) has up-to-date entertainment listings. Run by American expats, What's Up Buenos Aires is a slick bilingual guide to contemporary culture and partying in the city.

Food and Drink

The website of Guía Óleo has searchable listings and user reviews (in Spanish) of restaurants in Buenos Aires. For well-written insight on local cooking, restaurants, and ingredients, head to Saltshaker, American food writer Dan Perlman's blog. Another food-obsessed American, Allie Lazar, is the sassy voice behind the unflinchingly detailed restaurant and bar reviews at Pick Up the Fork.
